Conference

The scope of the Hybrid Photonics and Materials (HPM 2024) spans fundamental physics to applications of phenomena related to hybrid light-matter excitations and photon-mediated interactions of disparate material systems. This five day international conference combines talks from established scientists with presentations by young researchers and aspires to promote an active exchanges of ideas in order to advance developments in the field.

Topics

  • Hybrid photonics (organic-inorganic, novel lasers, low dimensional nanostructures, devices)
  • Quantum fluids and Bose-Einstein condensation in equilibrium and non-equilibrium systems
  • Quantum and Classical Simulators (optical lattices, coupled lasers, photon and polariton condensates, ion traps)
  • Quantum Photonics
  • Polaritonics (in inorganic, organic and hybrid microcavities)
  • Plasmonics

5th HPM conference

This is the fifth event in the series of international conferences dedicated to Hybrid Photonics and Materials, which is to be held on the island of Syros, Greece being built upon the success of:

Welcome to Syros

We look forward to welcoming you on Syros in September-October 2024! Visiting this island offers a unique opportunity to experience a new perspective of the Cyclades through immersion into Syros’ rich history, cultural legacy and wild Aegean natural beauty.

Located equidistantly between the ports of Athens and Santorini, Syros has long served as a strategic centre for maritime trade and cultural evolution. With its settlement dating back to the Early Bronze Age, the island has since been inhabited by Romans, Arabs, Ottoman Turks, Franks and Venetians, with each civilization leaving its distinct imprint on the island. The story of contemporary Syros begins in 1827, when the island served as a refuge for ambitious, educated and wealthy Greek émigrés from Asia Minor and neighbouring islands under Ottoman occupation. It didn’t take long for Syros to grow into a prosperous centre for industry and innovation, housing the first post office, public school and shipyard in Greece, defining it as the cultural epicentre of the Aegean. Modern Syros continues this narrative as the home of the Aegean University and the Merchant Marine Academy.

The island’s capital, Ermoupolis (named after Hermes, the ancient Greek god of trade) is also the administrative capital of the Cyclades. Upon arrival into the main port, you will be greeted by a colourful mosaic of cubist houses stretching across the seafront and rising over the city’s two hills. The left hill is home to the medieval town of Ano Syros, founded by the first Venetian settlers in 1200, overlooked by the Catholic Cathedral of Saint George. The right hill hosts the picturesque quarter of Vaporia and the Orthodox Church of Saint Nicholas, built between 1848 and 1870 by royal decree of King Otto to honour the city’s patron saint. In-between lies the central square of Miaouli, site of the grand Town Hall and Apollon Theatre – both vibrant examples of neoclassical architecture which is a characteristic of the island. We hope you enjoy this unforgettable journey through Cycladic civilisation in this beautiful part of the world!
